Where your eyes should be looking when sparring

Ive heard time and time again of many people that when there sparring, they are constantly looking at there opponents eyes. When they attack, defend, counter and everything else, they always look in there opponents eyes. I decided to try this once as normally i gaze at the chest area, as it seems natural to me. After two minutes of looking at my opponents eyes i noticed that i was getting beaten all over the place. From the hands down i was blind and it wasn't long till i was looking naturally at the chest area again. Any views on this?

Ive tried the same advice a few times, you tend to get tunnel vison which makes it difficult to see thinks coming from wider angles like roundhouses and hook punches. When i used to try it i also found i got caught alot with low sweeps its almost impossible to see it coming when ur looking into the eyes of you opponent, and i think you'd get takendown a heck of a lot more. i gaze towards the torso too, just seems to make more sense.

The chest is good for fighting guys. However when fighting a woman that is obviously not wearing a bra that supports her very well, its a bit dizzying. I say look women in the eyes. Also if you cant see very well when looking anyone, male or female, in the eyes then you are too close to them.

Definitely agree about looking at the torso (I guess I look slightly below the neck). I haven't tried looking my opponent in the eyes (I'd rather not risk getting hit in the head with a roundhouse), but in my opinion, torso is good because:
1. Peripheral vision lets you then see arms AND legs.
2. The eyes are such small points, and focusing on them seems to focus you too much... And I can imagine that if your opponent doesn't telegraph his attacks by where he looks on you, looking at the eyes won't even help you anticipate a move.
3. This is a personal reason, because when we spar in class we aren't allowed to hit below the belt, so looking at the torso is naturally better since it's usually my target.
4. I'm short, and if I have to look up to see someone's eyes, I'm definitely not going to see their legs.

i have always looked at the eyes or around the face and i find that i can use my periphial vision to see what is coming. it is great because it can really unnerve people and (sadly) even fairly experienced people look where they are thinking about kicking before they do. it is kinda like poker, it helps you read your oppenent. you can tell if they are feeling over classed, under classed, going to feign or kick, etc. infact you can pick up their pattern quicker because even if they do not strike you can tell where they wanted to strike. you can also tell if you have an opening somewhere on your body because they will keep looking at that location.

Hi Jennifer, thats good. The main thing is that, what works for you is what counts. I have spoke about this topic with lots of people and i always get different answers as different things work for different people.
